The Disciples’ Question Lingers in the Mind
This meditation is based on a passage for October 9, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Luke 8:16-25
Reflection and Question: Jesus’ words have gotten pretty intense at this point in the Gospel of Luke: “For those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.” Jesus is harsh toward His own family and then questions the disciples’ faith when they fear mortal danger. No wonder they ask, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?” Who, indeed. For a moment, we take that awestruck step back with the disciples and with the question that lingers in our minds: “Yes, who is Jesus?”
Prayer: Holy Jesus, Child of God, You are clear that those closest to You, as close as family, are those who hear the word of God and do it. Yet, Your words are challenging and Your actions astounding. Despite all this, help us to hear and do. Amen.
